When I first started writing Instagram captions, I would write whatever came to mind. As I began to grow my brand, and be more intentional with my content, it became essential for me to be more strategic when writing my captions.

You may post beautiful videos and images, but you could be losing out if you’re not giving attention to your caption. A strong caption can help you shape your brand story, position you as an expert in your niche, and grow your account. Here are some tips on how to write a killer Instagram caption.


Instagram shortens your captions after three or four lines, which means you have a few seconds to capture your audience’s attention when they first see your post. Your intro will determine whether people continue scrolling or they stop to read your caption, so make sure that it’s compelling.


There’s no wrong or right length for caption writing. However, the quality over quantity rule applies in this case. If you’re ever in doubt, remember that this is a social app, so you don’t want your captions to be too long.


Make use of emojis to add a little bit of character to your captions. Emojis can also help aesthetically break up long strings of copy and make sure that the emojis that you choose to use are in line with your tone of voice and branding. 


Writing captions is very similar to storytelling. You can either share something relatable, funny or even controversial. Add personality and spice to your captions by using words or phrases that paint a picture.

Draft your captions on a separate platform

You are most likely to think more strategically if you create your captions on a different platform. Batch write your captions in Word, for example, edit and then schedule your posts on an app that is affiliated with Instagram.

Your audience will continue to come back to your content if you provide value. Offer tips, tricks or any information that will elevate your community’s experience.

Now that your audience has consumed all your content, it’s time to encourage them to act. Your audience is ready and waiting to engage with you, but you need to lead the way.  You could use the following CTA’s:

  • Share their thoughts in the comments
  • Tag a friend that needs to see this
  • Save this for later

The objective is to create engagement to start a conversation, which will help you grow your engagement and ultimately boost your growth.
