At the beginning of the year I decided to give my website a mini facelift. Nothing major, just a few tweaks here and there. First stop was undoubtedly my About Me Page.

Did you know that is probably the most visited page on your website/blog? Then surely we should spend a little more time making sure we make a good first impression. Today I’m sharing how to write a killer bio for your blog.

Update your Image

When was the last time you changed your image on your about me page? I had to update my photo earlier this year, because I had never done so since I launched my site. Make sure that it’s a high res image of course. Select an image where you look happy and you can clearly see your eyes. People should feel welcome when the go through your site.

Use your own voice

I know some of us genuinely believe our bios should be formal, but that’s not always the case. When I updated my bio I couldn’t believe how formal it was, I didn’t sound like myself! Before all else, you need to introduce yourself, talk a little about your family and where you live. What do you do and why do you do it?  Once that’s done its time to throw in some fun facts.  What do you love to do in your spare time? Do you have a favourite TV series? What’s your favorite food? What’s makes your heart burn with passion? Once you’re done read it out loud. The ultimate objective here is help your audience get to know you a little better.

Be Honest

Don’t say you do yoga if you’ve never seen the inside of a yoga studio in your life! People rightfully deserve to know the real you, not your false self. Be authentic.

Keep it brief

Try not to ramble on. Your readers’ attention is probably not going to be long, so keep it brief.

Be Humble

This is an excellent opportunity to list any accomplishments, but make sure you stick to the facts. Refrain from making any outlandish statements like “I’m the best mom blogger in SA” meanwhile you’ve never won that award.

It is clear that you don’t have to wait to rebrand before you update your About Me. All you need to do is update your image, use your own voice, keep it brief and be humble. When was the last time you updated your bio?
