Gone are the days when our careers were limited to being doctors, nurses, and teachers. We can now monetise our influence. I think it’s significant for me to emphasise that being an influencer should not be your long term goal. It should merely be a stepping stone towards greater things.

I remember the first time I received a phone call from the very first brand  I ever worked with and they referred to me as a “mom influencer”. I was taken aback because I hadn’t set out to be an influencer but I knew that was the beginning of an exciting journey. Today I would like to share with you how to become an influencer.

Find your niche

What are you passionate about? Then that should be your niche. Here’s the thing you undoubtedly have to be passionate about your niche, because you’ll need to talk about it every single day. And if you’re not passionate it will eventually start to show.

Define your target market

Define your target persona. How old are they? Where do they live? What kind of music do they listen to? You get where I’m going with this right? Once you’ve precisely defined your target persona you’ll instantly know what kind of content you need to create for them. You need to continuously add value, so your audience can consider you to be an expert in your niche.

Choose your platform

Currently, Instagram is the best platform to build your career. If Facebook is your thing then stick to it, but most brands are interested in working with Influencers that are Instagram. So if your long-term goal is to monatise your influence then Instagram is the best option.

Create a content strategy

Once you’ve defined your niche and your target market, it’s time to create your content. The two things that will set you apart from the rest are quality and consistency. Your audience needs to know they can trust you provide valuable content on a regular basis. That is how you build your tribe.

Focus

Create as much content as you can, that is the only way you can perfect your craft. I know most of us typically want to focus on the numbers. But the only way you’ll grow your following is by creating quality content.

Those are the 5 key steps you need to become an influencer. If you only follow some of them, you’ll slowly make your way towards becoming an influencer. But if you do all these things together and have a powerful strategy, that will help to speed things up exponentially.
