There are countless women who provide me with inspiration on a daily basis and Buhle Mabanga is undoubtedly one of them. I’ve watched her blossom into an incredible woman, especially in the past year. Not only do I feel we can all learn so much from her but I know we’ll walk away with handy lifestyle tips to implement in our own lives.

Here I talk to Buhle about all things health and wellness, mainly focusing on her morning routine.

Tell us a little more about yourself (kids, partner, what you do for a living)

I’m very tempted to say I’m a businesswoman training to be a yogi, a mom to my 3 cubs and a wife to my amazing husband. However, this will be going against everything that I have been studying in the last year in my mindfulness journey. I am pure energy, I am pure LOVE and JOY and I am Potential. This is who I am at my core. Everything else is an experience aligned to my purpose.

What is your morning routine?

My day starts at 5 am with a session of yoga and meditation. This is my favorite part of the day because this where I get to connect with myself and also set an intention for the day. I always pick something I need to work on for the week and this week’s intention was about setting boundaries with kindness. The school runs follow thereafter.

How has your routine changed over recent years?

It’s changed in so many ways. Waking up to check on my phone and social media was the first thing I did every morning. I’m happy I’ve found a more peaceful way to start my day.

What time do you go to bed?

It depends. If I’m home early, we usually go to bed at 7:30 pm with my youngest kids Lilitha and Lolothando, after a good African tale of course. If I’m out with friends, my husband or late a meeting, I usually aim for 10 pm.

How soon do you check your phone in the morning?

I check it just before I get into the car. Phones can be a distraction sometimes. I prefer to get on top of my routine first before I check my phone. Everything else can wait.

How does your family fit into your morning routine?

I’m blessed to have a helper to assist me with getting the kids ready in the morning. My job is to make sure I get them to school on time. I enjoy doing their lunch in the morning more than bathing and dressing them up. I don’t know how their Anti does it. It’s such a mission. My husband joins me for yoga or a walk in nature on some weekends.

What is your healthiest morning habit?

I always have a glass of celery juice first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. I love it. It cleanses and purifies the internal organs of the body, such as the liver.

What is your worst morning habit?

Taking my time. Not checking the time.

What do you normally listen to in your car?

I enjoy listening to podcasts. I prefer podcasts or audiobooks because I can choose the type of content that suits where I’m at right now. My big son Lukhona struggles with it. He misses our morning drive hip hop sessions. My favorite podcasts are Super Soul Sunday, Goop, Hey girl and Hay House Live.

On days you’re not settled in your home, are you able to adapt your morning routine to fit in with a different environment.

Oh yes, without a doubt. My routine is part of who I am.
