Wellness has been a buzzword for some time now. We are continually being bombarded with information about what it means to live a life of wellness.
The word wellness means, “a state of being in good health, especially as an actively pursued goal.” Here’s the thing, wellness doesn’t need to be complicated. Once you understand what it means to live well, you can start implementing strategies to live a healthier life. Most importantly, you must remember that whatever works for the person next to you might not work for you. I have my version of a life of wellness. These are the 5 wellness rules I give myself.
We all know the benefits of drinking sufficient water but somehow we never get around to it. I drink at least 1 litre of water a day. I know that the recommended amount is 2 litres per day but I’m not there yet. I fill up a bottle of water every morning and carry it with me everywhere I go. I usually add lemon to spice things up a little. Water does wonders for your skin and your overall health.
Self-care through body movement
I work out virtually with my trainer three times a week. I’ll be honest with you, I initially signed up with a trainer because I wanted to age like J.Lo! I know, exceptionally superficial right? I mean, there’s nothing wrong with having the desire to look good but there are so many perks to working out besides getting J.Lo abs. Over time I realised how good I felt after every session. Working out is now a form of therapy for me — it helps me clear my mind and manage my stress.
Meditation, journaling and praying are part of my morning routine. I use this time to clear my mind and reconnect with myself. A few minutes of intentional quiet time has been proven to boost resilience and emotional wellbeing.
Supplements and vitamins
I haven’t always been a fan of supplements, but when I started my wellness journey, I knew that I had to introduce them to my diet. I take Zinc and Collagen, which are both good for my skin and hair, and I take vitamin C supplements, daily.
I looooove my sleep. I make sure that I get a minimum of 7 hours of sleep every day without fail. Getting enough sleep is essential for wellbeing and optimal health.
No screen time before bed
I try to put my phone away after 7 pm every day. At 7 pm I check my phone one last time, then I put it away for the day. If you call or text me after 7 pm, you’ll only receive a response the following morning. It’s such a freeing experience! It almost feels as if I’m shutting out the rest of the world for the day.
Wellness is not a one size fits all — you need to figure out what works for you and run with it. These are the 5 wellness rules I give myself. What are some of your wellness rules that you swear by? Let me know in the comments section below.
