When we relocated to KZN just over a year ago, I was devastated. I put on a brave face but inside I was dying. How was I going to survive this slow-paced lifestyle? Nothing happens there! By all means, I’m originally a Durban girl, but I had become accustomed to the fast-paced Jozi life.

Relocating has naturally forced me to slow down. I currently spend less time on the road or lunching with friends. I won’t lie I miss the leisurely lunches, but I now have the time to focus on the more meaningful things in my life. I’m not that kind of girl that wants to work crazy hours and be constantly hustling. With no time for my family. I have chosen to focus on what’s important and uniquely define my own success. Slow living is a lifestyle approach that suggests slowing down everyday life for a longer and better quality life. Intentionally slowing down doesn’t mean you’re being lazy, it merely means carefully choosing to simplify your life. Although I have been unconsciously practicing slow living habits in the past year, today I want to share with you the 5 slow living habits I want to adopt in 2019.

Learn to say No

Stop saying yes to the things that you don’t want to do. Just because you’ve been invited to a social function doesn’t mean you have to attend. Say no to spending time with people that drain your energy. You know those people that never have anything positive to say about anything. Drop them. You have to be selective about how you spend your time.

Practice stillness

I remember hearing that Kanye West doesn’t speak to his family for an hour after he wakes up every morning. I was sincerely convinced that the man had completely lost his damn mind. The Kardashian curse was getting the best of him! But the poor guy was just practicing one of the most important rituals in life, stillness. I’ve started meditating this year, and it’s been a game changer. Meditation helps to reduce stress, control anxiety, promote emotion health, positively enhance self-awareness and many more. Meditation is not for everyone, but maybe you should consider taking a minute to just be still and reset during the day.

Do what I love

I don’t have any New Year’s resolutions for 2019, but my mission is to create a life that I love, doing what I love at my own pace. That way I am able to carefully structure my days to fit my slow pace lifestyle. Now I’m not saying you have to quit your job, but be productive at work so you have time to do what you love in your spare time.

Practice gratitude

I’ve started recording 3 things that I’m grateful for on a daily basis. Being grateful undoubtedly has a positive mental and emotional effect. Satisfaction prevents you from thinking about what you don’t have.

Reduce screen time

This is a big one for me. I know I spend an obscene number of hours on my phone. As a digital entrepreneur I am constantly on my phone, but that’s no excuse for the amount of hours I spend on my phone per week. This year I’ve committed to reducing my screen time. It’s a tall order, but I know I need to make a change.

It is clear that slow living meaningfully improves the quality of life. The beauty of it all is you can instantly start by making minor adjustments and gradually build on that. Comment below by letting me know whether this is a lifestyle you would consider adopting.
