Contrary to what we read on social media, self-care doesn’t always have to equate to a trip to the spa or a yoga retreat. So, what does it mean to really take care of yourself?
It’s the small choices that we make daily that have the potential to leave us feeling stressed or burnt out. I’ve introduced self-care habits that I like to include throughout the day. When I action them all, I feel invincible! In this blog post, I would like to share 5 self-care habits that will make you happier.
Learn to say no
This is a tough one but probably the most critical habit on this list. It’s okay to say no to a lunch date with a friend or a play date for your little one if you don’t want to go. Instead of setting yourself up for added stress, use that time to do something that brings you joy.
Process your emotions
As human beings, we are too quick to discard our emotions instead of processing them. If you’re feeling sad, firstly acknowledge that you’re sad and then take a few minutes to work through those emotions. Take time to listen to what your body needs. When we don’t work through our emotions, we increase our chances of taking out our frustrations on our friends or loved ones.
Choose friends and acquittances wisely
Pay attention to the kind of people that you surround yourself with. What type of energy do they bring to the table? Are they continually complaining, putting other people down or gossiping? I choose to spend my time with people who are positive and inspirational. On the flip side, you should evaluate the kind of energy you bring to the table and be the kind of person you would want to be around.
Work towards your goals
Most of us have goals that we have set for ourselves. When life gets demanding, it’s easy to put those goals aside, and when you don’t reach them, we naturally feel disappointed or defeated.
Take a step each day towards your goals, no matter how small, the joy of working towards something is incomparable.
Do something that brings you joy
Do something for yourself for a change, mama. Like blasting your favourite song in the car, dancing or jumping on your kids’ trampoline. As moms, it’s easy for us to forget how to have fun!
These are 5 self-care habits that will make you happier. There’s no need to wait for a yoga retreat or spa day to be re-aligned or rejuvenated when you can take care of yourself right now. Do you have any self-care tips you would like to share? Let me know in the comments below.
